iOS5 First Thoughts

200 features

Wow. That's a bevy. I can't say I feel like those 200 features are totally evident, but it's just day one. What is evident is what hasn't changed. I loathe unread message indicators, especially when they don't sync across the multiple clients that I check e-mail from. iOS is notorious for marking SMTP and IMAP messages un-read, because they are un-read to the device, that have been read on other clients. This was clearly one area that I was hoping would have improved. Sure, rich text is nice to have, but frankly, I'd rather clearly the darn message indicators over being able to bold and make things red and underlined.

Verizon call quality

From the few calls I have made thus far on iOS5, I have to say, the call quality sounds different. One complaint I had with iOS4 on Verizon was that calls sounded "tinny". After today's update they sounds like they have more bass and bottom frequencies and the overall tonal quality is warmer.

The bad

Bluetooth in-car works just as it always did. Direct-connect into my Pioneer head-unit however is a total loss. The phone picks up the power lead, but the head-unit isn't detecting music of playlists. So, I have to hope Pioneer, which markets my head-unit as "future-proof", will get on it and release a firmware update. But, Pioneer isn't exactly known for releasing firmware updates, actually, they rarely do.
